Tech Goes Home is fighting for digital equity. We help bring computers, internet, and training to those without so students can do homework, adults can find jobs, seniors can connect with loved ones, and all can lead healthy lives. VOLUNTEER Join the fight for digital equity by volunteering with TGH! Who are we? At Tech Goes Home, we help bring computers, internet, and training to those without so students can do homework, adults can find jobs and manage finances, and seniors can connect with loved ones and lead healthy lives. Our program includes 15 hours of digital skills training, a new computer to take home, and for learners who lack home internet, a year-long internet subscription. This summer we’ve navigated changes across our work and deliberated on ongoing volunteer needs. Incredible volunteers have grown our digital resource library to include hundreds of tutorials, webinars and translated materials. Unfortunately, we need to pause additional content creation in order to review current educational resources and transition platforms, as well as organize internal capacity to launch future engagement opportunities. We hope to share more information about how to get involved in the coming weeks! Please stay tuned. Interested in volunteering as a group or with your company? Please reach out to volunteer@techgoeshome.org for more information. FAQ Anchor 1 What is Tech Goes Home? Tech Goes Home (TGH) works to achieve digital equity by bringing digital skills training, tools, and access to those without so that students can succeed in school, adults can find jobs and manage finances, and seniors can connect with loved ones, and all can lead healthy lives. Learners complete fifteen hours of classroom training, earning a new Chromebook or iPad, and access to home internet. Who does Tech Goes Home serve? - Volunteer FAQ | Tech Goes Home
Tech Goes Home is fighting for digital equity. We help bring computers, Internet, and training to those without so students can do homework, adults can find jobs, and seniors can connect with loved ones. VOLUNTEER FAQ Below you will find the answers to many of the questions you might have about volunteering for TGH. What is Tech Goes Home? The Tech Goes Home (TGH) program is a national award-winning initiative that has successfully provided residents the tools, education and access required for 21st-century skills development. Through partnerships with schools and community institutions, participants develop skills and habits required for smart technology and Internet use. Enrollees receive fifteen hours of classroom training, a new netbook or mobile device (for $50 co-pay), and, for eligible residents, access to low-cost home Internet. Who does Tech Goes Home serve? Tech Goes Home creates access and possibilities for new technology users: Majority of household incomes under $20,000/yr 79% single female heads of household 41% of adults are English language learners 10% of students have severe physical disabilities Why should I volunteer? The organization needs you! TGH is a non-profit with less than 10% overhead. Translation: as much money as possible is spent on the program, and the TGH staff relies heavily on volunteer resources to achieve its mission. The issue is urgent! Being connected to the Internet has become an essential extension to our families, our schools, and our places of employment. There is convincing evidence that up to 25% of a child’s grade is related to parental involvement, yet many participating parents report that they had never even been to their child’s school prior to TGH. In addition, up to 80% of all jobs are now posted exclusively online, leaving many unemployed members of the community without access. In the past three years TGH has worked with over 10,000 Bostonians to bring families closer together and to help them use online resources to improve their lives, but there is still tremendous need for digital equity. By joining TGH you: Make a lasting impact on underserved Bostonians by helping them live, learn, earn, work, and play through TGH Join a network of dedicated people working to lower the digital divide Improve your own knowledge of online resources -- 100% of our trainers report that they learned something new Gain access to volunteer appreciation events such as happy hours and socials What would I be doing as a volunteer? In a nutshell, volunteers help TGH participants understand how online resources and technology can improve their lives. Volunteers can help out in class with technology and resource guidance, and they can help in class or remotely by translating for participants who don't speak English. CLICK HERE for full descriptions of the volunteer positions What is the time commitment? Most of the TGH volunteer positions are flexible enough to let volunteers “choose their adventure” in terms of time commitment. However, most volunteers will serve 1-2 hours per week. Occasionally there are one-time opportunities that only require a single-day commitment. To find out more information about these opportunities email volunteer@techgoeshome.org Where would I be volunteering? Volunteers either work at one of our TGH sites or work remotely depending on how they want to help. There are 120 program sites in the Greater Boston area, and volunteers will be matched to a site that is accessible and where there is need. Are there virtual volunteer opportunities? Yes! Volunteers with busy schedules can still: Offer resource guidance and tech support to our participants online Translate materials for the TGH website Create tutorials for the TGH website Who volunteers? TGH Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes, and from all over the Greater Boston area. Previous volunteers have worked everywhere from Google to Boston Public Schools. What is Orientation/Training? Each volunteer will attend an orientation prior to working with TGH. Orientations are run by our fantastic partners at Boston Cares. Can I do multiple volunteer programs? Of course! We encourage our volunteers to engage with TGH in as many ways as possible. What is the application process like? 1. Complete an application. 2. Attend an orientation & training event. That’s it, easy as 1-2-3!
- Tech Goes Home | Becoming a TGH Site
Tech Goes Home is fighting for digital equity. We help bring computers, Internet, and training to those without so students can do homework, adults can find jobs, and seniors can connect with loved ones. INSTRUCTOR APPLICATION BECOMING A TGH CERTIFIED INSTRUCTOR Before you start your application: All instructors must be employees or long-term volunteers of an official TGH Partner Site. Make sure your organization is an official TGH Partner Site. Please check with your supervisor, director, or head of school to confirm. TGH has four different programs and you must be certified to teach in each one. Read the program descriptions on the overview page to determine which program(s) best fits your organization’s and participants’ needs. 1. Complete an Online Instructor Application You may ask the TGH Program Supervisor at your organization for the link to the instructor application. You may also email us for it at program@techgoeshome.org Please only fill this form out ONCE. If you have additional information to update TGH about, please reach out to us directly via email. The instructor application will collect some general information about you, your supervisor, and your participants. The application will ask you to complete an Internet Basics assessment and input your score into your application. Completing an application does not guarantee that you will become a TGH Certified Instructor. 2. Complete the Internet Basics Assessment Carefully follow the instructions in the Instructor Application so that you complete only the required Internet Basics assessment. On average, the Internet Basics Assessment takes about 10 mins to complete You must achieve a passing score of 85% or higher. Please take the assessment in a quiet environment where you can concentrate - don’t multitask! 3. Attend a Instructor Orientation Instructor Orientations are held monthly. The Program Manager will personally invite applicants who are a good fit to attend an Instructor Orientation. We ask that you do not extend your invitation or share any links with other people, since all attendees require pre-approval. These orientations provide a comprehensive review of all the responsibilities, logistics and steps required to run a TGH course. Attending an orientation does not automatically certify you to be an instructor. Please wait for a follow-up email to update you on your application status. Emails will be sent no later than five business days after each orientation. 4. Submit Documentation for a Background CORI Check In order to comply with federal law, TGH is required ti conduct CORI checks for all instructors. You will be asked to complete the CORI Acknowledgement Form after attending an orientation. You will need to provide a government-issued picture ID such as a Driver's License, Passport, State ID, or Legal Resident Card. You will receive an email letting you know whether or not your CORI has been accepted by TGH. If you have a CORI record, please know that TGH will make decisions compassionately. 5. Receive a Decision Regarding Your Application Once all the steps above are complete TGH will make a decision on your application. In some instances, TGH may ask for additional steps or follow up before making a final decision. You will receive an email letting you know if your application has been approved or denied. Your approval email will also contain information and instructions on the next steps to start running TGH courses at your site. Important notes: We will update you on your application status after each step via email. You may also email us with questions and clarifications. Your instructor status might become "expired" if you do not teach a course within a year of attending an orientation. TGH may update or change the instructor requirements listed above at any time. If a new requirement is added, you will need to complete it to keep your instructor status up-to-date or your certification may become expired. If your instructor status becomes expired, you may contact TGH and we will let you know what is required to bring your instructor status up-to-date and renew your certification.
